Shadows Shaping Forms Shaping Shadows is a series of spatial models shaped and informed by their own shadows, while simultaneously being the source of those shadows. This tension of mutual influence was explored digitally and analogously through prototypical experiments. Through the serial transformation, further development and translation of a shadow phenomenon into spatial models, constant comparison between the various stages of work and the resulting models, and vice versa, we analysed the possibilities of manipulating shadows in a research-based manner.
The shadow became a design parameter for the spatial models.
Through our experiments, we also developed an understanding of how shadows can guide and stimulate our perception of the environment, materials, surfaces and moods, enabling us to deliberately use shadows as a design parameter. These works reveal that the presence of light and shadow not only influences the visual perception of a space, but can also evoke feelings and memories that accompany us to a wide variety of places and influence how we experience them.
